Shoulder Impingement is a very common condition of the shoulder that many people suffer from. The classic symptoms are pain with lifting the arm to the side as well as behind the back. As this condition progresses, the motion and strength of the shoulder will worsen and you can begin to experience neck and elbow pain. The root cause of this condition will stem from poor shoulder mechanics (weakness/tightness) that promotes “compression” of the shoulder; however, the treatment of this via physical therapy is highly successful. What is Bursitis?
“Bursa” is a fluid filled sack that is located between a muscle and a bone. The purpose of the bursa is to protect or cushion the surfaces. Bursitis is when a “bursa” becomes irritated an inflamed; often resulting from a direct blow (fall or hit) or from too much “compression”. If the muscles/tendons of a joint are too tight or too weak the mechanics of the joint will change which can cause increased pressure on a bursa. With time, the bursa will become inflamed and painful; your strength and motion of the joint will decrease. Treatment of bursitis can be done with the combination of medication (for inflammation control) and physical therapy to correct the underlying mechanics of the joint for a long lasting result.
What is Tendonitis?
A “Tendon” is a fibrous stand of tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone. Long muscles will have tendon on both ends of it. (You can feel a tendon at the front of your elbow, when your elbow is bent; this is your biceps tendon.) Tendonitis is when a tendon becomes irritated which causes inflammation/pain. Common example of this is “tennis elbow or lateral epicondylisits”. This is commonly caused by too much “compression” or “tension” on the tendon. If a muscle is overly tight, it places strain upon the tendon and the bone/muscle in which it attaches resulting in discomfort. Treatment of tendonitis can be easily handled with the combination of medication (for inflammation control) and physical therapy to correct the underlying mechanics. The key to a fast recovery, is to avoid waiting too long before getting help. The long your contend with tendinitis, the longer and more difficult it is to recover from.
